My Authorial Debut

The Thrilling Sequel

You see what happens?

So I’ve been helping my friend Sara Mueller sew a Victorian bustle gown. And now, of course, I’ve decided I have to have a new project of my own because, Jesus Christ, it’s like inviting an alcoholic to a liquor party when you put a needle and thread into my hands.

I’m finally going to start a long-promised project for the daughter, with the hopes of having it done in time for Orycon. I’m going to make her a new corset (with an incredible blue, white, and black plaid satin that we found about five yards of at Goodwill), a ruffly white taffeta skirt (I’m going to use TV’s Bustle Petticoat pattern, but modify it so it doesn’t have a big honkin’ placket right down the front), a little bolero jacket, and possibly a hat. She really wants me to make her the TV Polonaise, (which I do have the pattern for, and actually I have a muslin of it already made up) but I think that’s just a mite ambitious given the time allotment.

Anyway, the corset has to come first. I’ve ordered busks & boning & such from Richard the Thread and, Lord Love Me, I’ve ordered a few yards of white coutil. I’m going to try using down-free ticking to interline the corset. Also, even though I have about a zillion corset patterns now, I’m going to try my hand at drafting the pattern for this one. Super happy funtimes!

Pictures as they become available.

All this talk of busks and coutil and plackets goes right over my head, but the gist seems to be: Daughter is going to look amazing at Orycon. I look forward to admiring her!
