The Thrilling Sequel

How to Train Your Dragon

Daughter and I had a rather slow, low-energy day today. We finally got to see “How to Train Your Dragon.” Liked it well enough, but I had issues.

1) The movie’s theme was that dragons are people too, and that all humans have to do to live in harmony with these sweet, kitten-like critters, is to find their special scratchy spot. OK, that was great, loved that. Very adorable. So why did that all go out the window when it came to the big bad dragon? Why is HE the only unredeemably mean dragon? Well, because we needed a big dragon fight, of course!

2) Also, one wonders what will happen now that the whole traditional ecological setup of dragon society has now been destroyed. I mean, the existence of the big mamma-jamma dragon suggests that there’s some kind of evolutionary advantage, right? Ecologies don’t spring up out of nowhere for no reason. When I saw all those dragons overrunning the village at the end of the movie, my response was probably exactly the opposite of what the moviemakers wanted. Instead of being filled with delight and wonder, I was like, “oh crap, now the top predator of the top predators is gone, those islanders are well and truly screwed.” I couldn’t help but think of this island I heard of once, where they imported cats, and the cats got totally out of control because there was nothing to control their reproduction, and soon all the native wildlife was gone and the island was just overwhelmed with cats.

But other than that, I really liked the movie.

    Friendly dragons- pshaw!

I long for the days of the inarticulate fury of the dragon from the Dragonslayer movie. Fire! Murder! Gender-conflict! Sorcerers that are so bad-ass they'd rather die then ressurect themselves than hassle with the travel.

    Hell yeah!

Thinking about the biology of fantasy can be such a distraction. I wander around World of Warcraft going “Why is this stretch of forest entirely inhabited by top predators? How do all these wolves survive wandering around 20 feet from each other in a prey-free environment?” It's a curse.

    1) I would think that a realistic world would have exceptions whereby some entities behave differently. (Some are more intelligent than others and others are appear to act in a “evil” manner, even my fish have those traits some play nice with each other and some try to eat the rest)

    2) I think you are anthropomorphizing the movie too much which is not intended as they modeled them on animal interactions not human interactions. In animal behavior it is possible to have a structure that benefits one more than the other.

Ecologies don’t spring up out of nowhere for no reason.

They do in movies, especially those spawned by George Lucas.

You know, your comment made me wonder if I could think of another animal species in which one part of the group did all the hunting to feed the other, and of course I thought of lions right off … female lions do all the hunting to feed the male lions. But their evolutionary benefit for doing this is that the stronger male lions serve a protective role. Maybe that's what the big-bad dragon does. Maybe he fights off other big-bads from encroaching dragon nests. And if so … then our poor dragons of Berk have another problem if another dragon nest decides to move in on their territory!

I don't know why I got hung up on the zoology, I know it's just a movie.

And the dragons are so friendly so FAST. I know the movie had to keep the narrative chugging along, but sheesh. Those were some quickly-tamed beasties.

    It's MAGIC! (waves hands.)

I always demand way too much reality in my fantasy. This has been remarked on by my friends and family more than a few times.

If the movie had more reality there wouldnt be any dragons or else ther would be and they would just eat everything in sight! (fat kids first!)

      Hey hey, Hay Kay!

Don’t get me wrong, I liked the movie. I just had … issues.
