My Authorial Debut

The Thrilling Sequel

I have a new boyfriend

And he is a cat. Yes, it turns out that Felix, the boy-cat that I rescued from Clackamette Park, is the smarmiest little dude I’ve ever met. If he were a skunk, he’d be Pepe Le Pew. See, he’s decided that he simply ADORES me. This weekend, while I was doing page proofs, he sat by me the whole time, gazing at me worshipfully. If I made the mistake of acknowledging his presence—or even just looking in his direction—he would take this as an invitation to step all over my manuscript to rub his cheek against my face, purring wildly.

This cat is my total love slave. It is very weird. I am used to highly indifferent cats. Maybe it’s because he’s a boy; I’ve always had girl cats and while they’re sweet and all, they’re not usually lovey-dovey. Well, at least not to this extent.

It’s kind of nice to get a little romance back in my life, I guess.

In other news … wow. Too much going on. I finished the page proofs for THE NATIVE STAR over the weekend, and they’re on their way back to NYC. It was a difficult process. As a pathological perfectionist, I don’t function well in “this is your last chance to touch this creative product EVER” situations, and so I have been a miserable ball of angsty angst. But I’m getting past it. Movin’ right along.

Speaking of movin’ right along, there are some awesomely fun things on the way, including more historical articles (damn, I thought I could keep up with doing one a month, but that hasn’t worked out, has it?) a flash site and book trailer. Also coming soon: my story “The Hag Queen’s Curse” (which appeared recently in Realms of Fantasy) is going up on Podcastle on April 13. Christiana Ellis (one of my favorite readers) is going to be doing the narration, so it should be AWESOME. I’m also making good progress on a new novel, getting words in on it most every day. So, yay that.

Happy Spring, everyone!

You rescued him, of course he adores you. Plus, yes, boy cats are often more lovey dovey than girl cats.

Have you found your black kitty yet? The one who's looking for you in your dreams?

I'm not even joking, I tend to take omens like that pretty seriously.

Rumble's certainly the biggest lovemachine who ever lived, and he's a boy. But that's hardly a scientific sample.

Happy spring to you, too, and congrats on getting the page proofs out.

Re Felix, I have had some dear cats over the years, but Xerxes–the only boy cat I've had–is paws-down the loviest, doviest cat I've ever had. And it makes sense that Felix adores and worships you. You saved him from the wet box and a damp and dismal fate.

Congrats on all the good news! Especially the cat love slave, of course.

Well, I adopted two kitties (littermates) from my vet's and one is mostly black. Not sure if she's the one, but these guys needed a home–they'd been at the vet's waiting a long time.

One of our cats, Travis, is kind of like that with Greg. When Greg sleeps, Travis has to lay within Greg's line of sight. If Greg turns to lay on his opposite side, Travis will walk around Greg and lay down, again within his line of sight. So no matter what, Travis is the first thing Greg sees when he wakes up.

Aw, that's sweet. But it just seems so un-catlike. Cats are supposed to barely tolerate us!

Believe it or not, I can do a pretty good Pepe le Pew, who must have spent a lot of time hanging out with Charles Boyer. Oui, oui!

That is awesome! Mazel tov! I'm sure Sula would approve. ;-)

Watch out, I have a long memory for such comments. I may demand that you actually demonstrate this talent at a con someday …

We have a stray cat that lives outside our house and we feed. It will follow us on the sidewalk when we are out walking. It usually gives up in about a block.
