In which I learn useful new Photoshop tricks

I consider myself reasonably well-versed in Photoshop, but I’m also a creature of habit. Once I’ve learned how to do something, I generally don’t go out looking for a more efficient way to do that thing. However, sometimes a situation crops up where the normal way of doing things becomes so wastefully time-consuming that one simply *has* to go looking for a better way.

Today I was faced with a PSD file with dozens upon dozens of layers. Each layer needed to be saved for the Web. The thought of clicking each layer, doing the “Save for Web” command, going through all those clicks … ugh. Impossible.

It turns out there’s an easier way! It’s  File>Scripts>Export Layers to File. What a delightful time saver. I wish I’d gone looking for this sooner, because it turns out that the “Scripts” menu is full of lots of other useful things as well. Like Layer Comps to Files. That one’s hella handy! I used it just as soon as I found it.

Of course, all you Photoshop geniuses out there already knew about these tricks. So never mind me. I’m just an old dog learning new tricks. In Photoshop.

Oh yeah – I've been using PS since version one, make an effort to go exploring new features, first thing, each release, and…this still happens to me all the time. I can't even remember how long it took me to start using the Layer Comps feature, and that's one of the biggest life-and-time savers ever in Photoshop.

Hee. You know, I made a bet with myself that you'd be the first (and perhaps the only) person to comment on this post. ;-P

  • robertnlee

Well, yeah. I mean, you can only know like a dozen people, maybe, who blurbed one of those fifty-dollar Photoshop books, once.

Did you really? That's awesome. Hey, how good are you at Flash, BTW?
I'm just learning AS3 and it's PISSING ME OFF.

  • robertnlee

Yeah, when I worked at Microsoft. Because the blurb said “…designer of XXX for Microsoft,” basically. I don't even remember which book it was, now – long out of print and about an old version, anyway.

Flash is not my strong suit at all – I learned the animation basics early on, have kept up and even done training occasionally on ActionScript and whatnot, but I'm just not an animator, really. I think I've done enough animation work, anyway, to say that.

I think I need to take a community college class. Especially if I can make cool new friends like on that NBC show.

  • robertnlee

Oh, I wouldn't: I'd go for certification with a pro/private training place. Costs about the same, way more intensive and over faster, and everybody's there because this is for their job, pretty much.

Also, you can get employers to pay for that stuff and let you off work easier than community college.

Oh, aren't you cute … you think that I'm employable! But yes, I see
your point. When I *did* have a sugar daddy employer,
they used to send me for training at those places and they were VERY
    efficient.

For the time being, I'll stick with the Adobe LiveDocs. They're always
    good for a laugh. ;-)
