My Authorial Debut

The Thrilling Sequel

The Native Star has cover art!

So I was kind of waiting for explicit permission from my editor to post this, but given that GoogleEgo has alerted me to its presence on Amazon (!!) and elsewhere, I figure I can consider it officially “in the wild.”

So here it is—the cover art for “The Native Star”! Wooo! Feast your eyes on that sumptuous display font! I am in love with that font. I’m guessing it’s a modern reinterpretation (the curlicue serifs on the “N” and “M” and “H” don’t look strictly period to me) but it’s a goddamn gorgeous one if you ask me. And you see, it even has stars in it. Get it?

I even got a quasi-urban-fantasy chick. I bet the designer was cussing me out because I didn’t give her a tattoo on her shoulder. How can a quasi-urban-fantasy book cover designer be expected to work under such conditions? No tattoo at ALL? What the hell, man?

Anyway, enough giddy foolishness. Now I have cover art, which means all the elements of my master plan are falling into place. Can a flash site and book trailer be far behind? Oh my dear friends, just you wait and see.

I love the font, too. And she's a VINTAGE Urban Fantasy Chick, so it's all good.

    Looking forward to it!

And I got magical sparklies, too. I *love* me some magical sparklies.

Congrats on the Nebula nomination, by the way!

  • adamilenkovicbrown

Wow, that really is a great cover!

  • rstefoff

Beautiful! I love the font–it's so nice a blend of period and weird and stylish that it gives the impression of having been designed just for your book.

I would totally pick this book up even if I didn't know you.

Thank you thank you thank you …

    Preorder today, baby!

  • http://www.demimonde.com M.K. Hobson

It's good to hear you say that … I am *quite* relieved overall. I
was so afraid of getting a bad cover.

  • http://www.demimonde.com M.K. Hobson

Isn't that just the bacon of fonts? (Oh wait, I forget, are you a
vegetarian? If so, then it's the avocado of fonts.)

  • http://www.demimonde.com M.K. Hobson

The cover designer is David Stevenson. I think he's the art director
at Spectra, or something like that. His Wiki page lists him doing a
lot of Star Wars covers. Luckily, I got no wookies. ;-P

Thank you! I had no idea this part of the process would be so exciting.

    Make that four.

    They’re sellin’ like hotcakes!

  • http://serge-lj.livejournal.com/ Serge

I'm disappointed. I was hoping for a Boris-style cover, with the heroine clad in a brass bra, and with a Wild West holster hanging from her G-string.

    Heheheh

    It's gorgeous, MK.

Speaking of Urban Fantasy, have you ever thought of writing about a couple like Nick & Nora Charles, but as dabblers in magic? You might thus start a new literary genre, the Urbane Fantasy.

  • http://www.demimonde.com M.K. Hobson

I love a good g-string as much as the next author, but since my female
lead's first name doesn't end in “-ella” I guess they decided to go
    this way instead.

    Glad you like it. ;-)
