Awesome J.C. Penny Steampunk Boot

shoeSo I was going to write a review of A.M. Dellamonica’s INDIGO SPRINGS this weekend, but time got away from me. Therefore, instead of the raw, incisive social commentary you’ve come to expect from this blog, you’ll have to be content with this super awesome steampunk-ish boot I found while cruising the J.C. Penny online store. I can just see these babies with black stockings under a frilly crinoline, can’t you? They’re  strong enough for a man, but made for an adventuresome female!

Maybe I’m just boot obsessed. But these are *totally* going on my wish list.

In other news … SyFy channel’s “Alice.” Oh, boy. I cannot WAIT for the Genevieve Valentine beatdown on this show. Thanksgiving may be over, but there’s still one turkey that needs to be carved.

Those are nice. Personally I’ve leaned quite heavily on my Justin Ropers; the height of the top is closer, I think, to actual 19th-century footwear (possibly because they were developed in the 19th Century along with Levi’s blue jeans?) The thing about Justin roper boots is that they are an actual cowboy boot worn by working ranchers (no-one believes this because of the laces, but it’s true). The other thing about ropers is they’re a stealth boot. When you buy a pair, they’re totally goofy looking because they come with this asinine golf tassel across the toes. For steamy, or just punky, elegance, remove this and discard it. (Actual cow people will remove this and replace it with an even fancier one. It’s a free country.) And they wear REALLY well.

    • Ooh. I just looked those up and they’re NICE. That frilly little doo-dad above the toe is kind of interesting. I’d love to see how actual cow people actually dude that up. Is there a bedazzler involved?

Aftermarket doodads in a range of styles are available at your local cowboy boot emporium. Personally I hate them; the ends tend to curl up.

I should also mention, you’ll want Dr Scholl’s in these. With a good pillow insole they’re wear-all-day boots.

  • I personally prefr cooked incisive, social commentary, but I’ll take what I can get. As for Alice, I recorded it because I preferred watching White Christmas. How much did this outing from the Skiffy Channel suck?

    • How much did this outing from the Skiffy Channel suck?

Well, I’ve only watched an hour of it so far. But it’s one of those reimaginings where they confuse darkness and despair for edginess. Alice is, like, a kickboxer or something, and the Mad Hatter is a drug dealer, and the March Hare is a psychopathic hired killer, and “White Hare” is some kind of shadowy organization that lures humans into Wonderland so that they can be abused and exploited …

      It’s just so … 1998.

      • Oooo-kay… It makes Tin Man‘s re-imagined Wizard of Oz look much better now.

Meanwhile, I wonder if I should try laying my hands on Dreamchild?

        • I kind of liked “Tin Man” because I think Zooey Deschanel is really pretty and I could just look at her for hours.

I have wanted to see “Dreamchild” for a long time, but haven’t gotten around to it. If you see it, let me know if it’s good!

          • If I remember correctly, my problems with “Tin Man” were of a storytelling nature, although I don’t remember what exactly the problems were. Speaking od Deschanel, did you know that her sister is the star of “Bones”, and that her mom played John Glenn’s wife in “The Right Stuff”?

As for “Dreamchild”… I’ve seen only bits and pieces about it, but it looks good. My understanding is that it’s about the relationship between Lewis Carroll (played by Ian Holm) and the very young Alice, and it suggests that his feelings were… well.. troubling.

          • I caught part of “Alice”. That scene with Matt Frewer as the White Knight almost had me reconsider. Then they cut to the drug lab, and that broke the spell.

This reminds me of the miniseries produced by the Halmi Family, my favorite of which was “Jack and the beanstalk”. In “Alice” though, the rough appears to greatly outweighed the few diamonds.

            • In my mind, Matt Frewer will always be Max Headroom. Poor chap. ;-)

There were bits and pieces of “Alice” that I liked. Overall, however, I was really frustrated with how the motivation of the characters just kept changing randomly. (The Duchess is a good example … what was up with HER? She had a completely illogical character arc.)

But it had a reasonably sweet little romance in it, which was nice.

              • Frewer has indeed tended to act like Max in everything that I saw him in after that. Even ST-TNG and “Generation X”. It makes me wonder if Frewer IS as manic as Max. He was quite restrained in what I saw of him in “Alice” though, but the more you tell me about the rest of the story, the more I’m convinced I made the right decision by staying away.
