I am so fascinated by Detroit that I have added a whole new category to my blog. Today’s dispatch from the Motor City (via CNN): “Detroit too broke to bury its dead.”

I know my obsession with this fine city’s ongoing decay is rather callous. The economic collapse of the region has been going on for a long time, and isn’t just some intriguing show for tourists to watch from afar. I apologize for my insensitivity to any Detroit citizens who read this blog.

In the interests of fairness, I’ll try to balance bad Detroit news with good Detroit news. Like this: “Detroit Zoo names its baby lemurs.” I’m sure you’ll agree, baby lemurs counterbalance a lot of unburied corpses.

Dr. Klahn: The CIA thinks they can infiltrate the Mountain of Dr. Klahn!
CIA Agent: You can’t scare me, you slant-eyed yellow bastard.
Dr. Klahn: Take him to… Detroit!
CIA Agent: No! No, not Detroit! No! No, please! Anything but that! No! No!

Here’s a Feel Good Detroit story… Two recent Pitt graduates (twins!) started “Habitat for Hamtramck.”

Buying and rehabbing houses and working with the locals to do grassroots urban renewal. Not gentrification!

Um, don’t those two lemurs look like they’ve been caught in a compromising situation?

Lemurs *always* look startled and vaguely guilty, IMHO. ;-)

Actually, looking at it again, it looks like one is giving the other a foot rub. I like the way these marsupials operate!

One of my Twitter buds declared yesterday that she had found a long-lost friend who is now a city planner in Detroit. I’m telling her to urge the LLF to !blog!!! The potential in that city is almost unlimited — just imagine the things a city can achieve if no one is paying attention!

I think someone should start up a sister city exchange between Detroit and Albany, OR. Big brother little brother kind of thing.
